So now the question is: what are they? Plants in the genus Clematis do this, as I could easily observe in Austin, but then I was surprised to learn that some plants in other botanical families do, too.
Biologists use the term ”convergent evolution” for the phenomenon in which entities in different families develop the same trait or ability. For example, birds, bats, and insects all learned how to fly.

I must disappoint you – but I don’t know what or who – only that it was a wild flower, no clematis.
