WPC: Forces of Nature

One of the strange and interesting forces of nature is the force of eruptions, volcanoes. This lava stream was flowing down the Icelandic landscape in the 17th century, and is now a beautiful but dangerous moss covered area. You cannot see what’s hiding under the moss – there could be huge holes several hundred metres down – now neatly covered death traps.

  2. Very interesting and something very different. Scary too if you think about it. Thanks for sharing this

    • Oh…just trying to look brave…No, I took a few steps on the stones out there because of the beauty of the landscape. I didn’t feel comfortable at all…but to get an idea of the vastness of the lava field (impossible as this is only some hundred metres in the picture and the stream runs for miles…) I had to try. My husband took the photo and
I guess he would have rescued me…

  3. Beautiful photo of you, Leya. But it doesn’t sound like a safe place to walk about…don’t know if I would be as brave as you tramping on the moss, even a little bit of it😀

    • No idea, really. I guess it happens faster than we think. When the volcano island of Surtsey appeared in the waters outside Iceland’s coast – if I remember it right, it only took a year or two before plants began to establish!

      • Ja, jag har förstått det. Min svägerskas syster och man var där för nåt år sen och sa att det var fantastiskt. Hon är också helt fotogalen så jag har sett många fina bilder därifrån, dock ingen som denna.
